Training 3: Developing a Child’s Comprehension, Text Structure & Writing skills through Developmentally Appropriate Practices, Birth to Age Five
The third training in the series will focus on literacy. Specifically, how children ages three to five develop comprehension skills, understand text structure, and begin to experiment with writing. The training will discuss how love for literacy and the development of writing can increase through experiences with adults, peers, and daily interactions. Participants will learn how to develop a child’s ability to understand the value of literacy and writing as a means of communication, learning, while developing emerging reading skills in young children. Many activities and ideas about building comprehension skills, knowledge of a text, and writing will be shared throughout the training. This three-week interactive online training will have one Zoom call built-in during week 2 of the training. The one-hour Zoom call will allow participants to collaborate and interact with one another, building a supportive environment for early childhood professionals to share their understandings and ideas of a child’s development in the areas of writing, comprehension, and text structure.
Presenter: Dr. Kelli Odden
You will be able to earn 3 Growing Future Clock Hours for each training completed, for a total of 9 clock hours. If you do not have a Growing Futures account and would like to create one, please visit www.ndgrowingfutures.org. CEU’s are not available for these courses.
Each training is three weeks long and completed at your own pace as an online format. The only time commitment is the one Zoom call.
• Week 1: The training will open at 8:00 am for the first week of the training and stay open. Take time to review the training, watch the videos, answer the questions.
• Week 2: Continue reviewing the training. Attend the one-hour Zoom conversation that will take place on Thursday from 7:00-8:00 pm during the second week.
• Week 3: Post follow up examples of interactions using the training information. The training will end on Friday of the third week at 11:59 pm.
Once the three-week training is completed, and upon successful completion of all course requirements, the credit will be awarded to your Growing Futures Learning Record. You will receive an email once your training has been recorded.
How do I sign up for the Trainings?
The trainings are set up in groups (30 per group). You may wonder why you are signing up for a group? Here is why- each training has a one-time face to face Zoom call built-in. Small groups will allow for a manageable amount of people in one Zoom call. The Zoom call will allow you to build relationships, have interactions, and learn from one another. Exciting!
