Training 2: Supporting a child’s Development of Phonological Awareness, Print, & Alphabet Knowledge, Birth to Age Five
The second training in the series will focus on children ages three to five years and their ability to hear sounds, recognize print, and develop their alphabet knowledge. The training will define phonological awareness, how it can be a part of everyday interactions with young children and that it is a crucial early step toward understanding the alphabetic principle and, ultimately, toward learning to read. As well as exploring how language, communicating, hearing sounds of language, and understanding print all lead to a child’s knowledge of alphabetic knowledge. Through this training, ideas will be gained about how supportive environments, communication with supportive adults and peers, and developmentally appropriate activities enhance a child’s development of literacy skills. This three-week interactive online training will have one Zoom call built-in during week 2 of the training. The one-hour Zoom call will allow participants to collaborate and interact with one another, building a supportive environment for early childhood professionals to share their understandings and ideas of a child’s development in the areas of phonological awareness, recognition of print, and alphabet knowledge.

You will be able to earn 3 Growing Future Clock Hours for each training completed, for a total of 9 clock hours. If you do not have a Growing Futures account and would like to create one, please visit www.ndgrowingfutures.org. CEU’s are not available for these courses.
Each training is three weeks long and completed at your own pace as an online format. The only time commitment is the one Zoom call.
• Week 1: The training will open at 8:00 am for the first week of the training and stay open. Take time to review the training, watch the videos, answer the questions.
• Week 2: Continue reviewing the training. Attend the one-hour Zoom conversation that will take place on Thursday from 7:00-8:00 pm during the second week.
• Week 3: Post follow up examples of interactions using the training information. The training will end on Friday of the third week at 11:59 pm.
Once the three-week training is completed, and upon successful completion of all course requirements, the credit will be awarded to your Growing Futures Learning Record. You will receive an email once your training has been recorded.
How do I sign up for the Trainings?
The trainings are set up in groups (30 per group). You may wonder why you are signing up for a group? Here is why- each training has a one-time face to face Zoom call built-in. Small groups will allow for a manageable amount of people in one Zoom call. The Zoom call will allow you to build relationships, have interactions, and learn from one another. Exciting!
Review the training dates and click on the link that coincides. If a date works for you in Group A for training 1 and then dates in Group B work better for you for trainings 2 & 3, that is okay. Choose dates that work for you. Click on the Eventbrite link next to the training link. You will register via Eventbrite and will receive an email within 24 hours of registering explaining the next steps.
