Exploring Biotech and Biofuels: A Nourish the Future Ag Biotech Workshop

About this event

The Exploring Biotech and Biofuels workshop introduces teachers to the ways biotech skills are incorporated into agriculture through bioscience and biofuels labs. For teachers of Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science. Explore the scientific basis for consumer acceptance of biotechnology. Understand the impact of biotechnology on environmental issues and sustainability and nutrition around the world. Consider the global pipeline for new biotechnology traits.

In this 2-day workshop, participants will:

create and test biofuels
learn about plant science and pollination
examine GMO facts, myths, and modern methods
perform DNA extraction
work through a soil bioinformatics case study

Day 1 will conclude with a dinner where participants can interact with industry experts to learn more about modern agriculture and its connections to biotech and biofuels. Day 2 includes a field trip to Tharaldson Ethanol.

Hotel room and meals will be provided. The hotel accommodations that are being provided are single rooms in an effort to provide the safest environment for you. Participants will receive $350 worth of supplies for classroom use, as well as 18 contact hours (1.8 CEUs).

We are offering this workshop as an ND professional development course. Register through NDSU here. You must register for the workshop before registering for the course. We will cover the $50 fee for PD.

*PLEASE NOTE: Due to the topics covered, this workshop is for middle and high school teachers. Elementary teachers should not attend. Also, this workshop is specifically designed for teachers from MN and ND.

COVID-19 Guidelines

In order to decrease your chance of getting or spreading COVID-19, all participants attending this workshop will be required to follow the guidelines required by the facility we host events in and the local municipality.

We encourage you to bring your own mask and hand sanitizer but these items will be provided on site.

Please do not attend the workshop:

1. If you have tested positive or are waiting for COVID-19 results

2. If you have been in close contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19

3. If you are feeling sick and running a temperature of 100 degrees or higher

Because the rules are changing, you will receive more information on the specific guidelines for the workshop you are attending.
